Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin are delighted to announce the appointment of Raffaela Zerilli as Director of Central Europe. In this newly-created role, Zerilli will work alongside London-based Partner Isabella Icoz to support the gallery’s growth in Europe. Based between Berlin and Zurich, Zerilli will play a pivotal role in spearheading the expansion of the gallery’s presence in the region, with a particular focus on Germany and Switzerland. This appointment comes on the heels of a recent wave of activity for the gallery in Europe, including the continued success of the gallery’s permanent outpost in London and the forthcoming new seasonal space in Milan, opening this month.

Led by Partner Jessica Kreps, Lehmann Maupin Milan will be housed at Circolo: the gallery will stage a group exhibition featuring new works by Hernan Bas, Mandy El-Sayegh, Todd Gray, Alex Prager, and Nari Ward.

Concurrently, Nari Ward will have a major retrospective at HangarBicocca, marking the artist’s first solo museum show in Europe, and Kim Yun Shin will participate in Foreigners Everywhere, the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its co-representation of pioneering artist Kim Yun Shin (b. 1935, Wonsan, North Korea) with Kukje Gallery. In February 2024, Lehmann Maupin will present a dedicated selection of works by Kim at Frieze Los Angeles, followed by an In Focus presentation at Lehmann Maupin New York in March. Additional forthcoming exhibitions include the artist’s first solo exhibition at a Korean gallery, opening at Kukje Gallery in March 2024. This comes on the heels of the artist’s recent solo exhibition at Nam-Seoul Museum of Art in 2023.

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its representation of artist Todd Gray. Based between Los Angeles, California and Akwidaa, Ghana, Gray is known for his photo assemblages that critically examine ideas of African diaspora, colonialism, societal power structures, and dominant cultural beliefs.

Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin are pleased to announce the appointment of Isabella Kairis Icoz as Partner, based in London. In her new role as a Partner, Icoz will collaborate closely with the gallery founders and partners to strengthen the gallery’s connections in the UK and Europe and provide a bridge for its artists’ activity in the region. Icoz will drive the gallery's programme, sales, and curatorial initiatives in the UK and Europe, which encompasses active participation in regional art fairs, including Frieze London and Art Basel.

Based in New York, Sam Pedder-Smith will be responsible for all financial, accounting, and business analysis processes for the company and will oversee the Human Resources department. Pedder-Smith will play a key role in strategic planning, investing, and budget forecasting; he will also continue to build and maintain strong relationships between the Lehmann Maupin finance team and artists, vendors, staff, and clients. Additionally, he will work closely with senior leadership to optimize profitability for both the gallery and its artists.

Lehmann Maupin announces representation of Korean artist, Sung Neung Kyung. For over five decades, Sung’s interdisciplinary practice has influenced discourses around performance, Conceptualism, and politics. He is known for his involvement in the avant-garde Korean art group Space and Time, an art and research collective. The collective was active in South Korea during the politically turbulent 70s and 80s and responded to these social conditions by staking out its own ground in relation to Western art and theory.

Lehmann Maupin announces representation of the Miami-based, Venezuelan American artist, Loriel Beltrán. Beltrán is recognized for his unique approach to abstraction, through a labor-intensive process that accumulates paint and color, defying traditional notions of painting and sculpture. We will debut new work by the artist as part of our upcoming presentation at Frieze Los Angeles (Booth E9). This will be followed by Beltrán’s first solo presentation in New York which will open in March 2023 as part of Lehmann Maupin’s ongoing In Focus series. 

Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin are pleased to announce the appointment of Ken Tan as Director. Based in Singapore, Tan will spearhead the gallery’s activities in Southeast Asia, including the expansion of client relations in the region and the development of further institutional opportunities for its artists. 

Lehmann Maupin returns to Palm Beach with a seasonal exhibition space in a new location in The Royal Poinciana Plaza. The season marks the gallery’s third consecutive year of programming in Palm Beach, and will feature a series of solo and group exhibitions, opening November 19 and running through May 2023.

For the inaugural edition of Frieze Seoul, Lehmann Maupin will debut a new work by Erwin Wurm rendered in Augmented Reality (AR) at the fair and our gallery in Seoul. Ghost (2022) will be presented via CollectAR—the gallery’s recently launched AR platform—allowing collectors and art fair goers the ability to experience the 3 meter work digitally in high resolution and to activate the work at the booth, as well as at the gallery’s location in Hannam-dong neighborhood.

Lehmann Maupin announces representation of American artist Tammy Nguyen. Nguyen is known for a multidisciplinary practice that encompasses paintings, drawings, artist books, prints, and zines that explore the intersections between geopolitics, ecology, and lesser-known histories. Nguyen’s work is currently on view with Printed Matter at NADA New York, where she curated a presentation of artists’ books, alongside a new limited edition print in support of Printed Matter / St Marks. Her work will also be featured in our upcoming presentation at Art Basel in June.

Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin are pleased to announce that Jennifer Mora is now Senior Director at Lehmann Maupin. Mora has spent over a decade at the gallery, starting in 2010 as a gallery assistant. Since then, Mora has developed deep relationships with artists, collectors, and curators, and her new position recognizes her leadership, along with her strategic guidance of gallery relationships with such notable artists as Hernan Bas, Mr., OSGEMEOS, Calida Rawles, Do Ho Suh, and Erwin Wurm.

Lehmann Maupin announces the launch of CollectAR, a new platform designed to present NFTs in Augmented Reality (AR), furthering the gallery’s commitment to the immersive presentation of artworks. This follows the gallery’s exclusive partnership announcement with Gemini in July 2021, when it became the first commercial art gallery to accept cryptocurrency through the Gemini platform for artwork sales globally. CollectAR will officially launch on March 29, 2022 in collaboration with NiftyGateway, a subsidiary of Gemini. The gallery will release three artworks—minted as NFTs and viewable in situ—by artist Ashley Bickerton, as part of his solo exhibition, Seascapes at the End of History at Lehmann Maupin New York.

Lehmann Maupin returns to Palm Beach with a seasonal exhibition space at a new location opening November 23 and running through April 2022. We are pleased to announce our representation of American artist Tom Friedman in Asia. Friedman’s work is currently on view as part of the exhibition States of Being at our seasonal gallery in Taipei and will be part of our presentation at KIAF Art Seoul in October. We remember the life and legacy of celebrated Korean artist Kim Guiline, who passed away on August 12, at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Nigerian gallery Retro Africa will present a seasonal exhibition from July 19 to August 17 at Lehmann Maupin’s space at 536 West 22nd Street in New York. The exhibition, Do This in Memory of Us, will feature Nigerian-American artist and writer Victor Ehikhamenor, Congolese painter Chéri Samba, and African-American artist Nate Lewis. This presentation is Retro Africa’s first in the United States and will have an opening reception on Monday, July 19, 4–8 PM.

Lehmann Maupin announces an exclusive partnership with the crypto platform Gemini, becoming the first commercial gallery to accept crypto through the Gemini platform for artwork sales globally. Cryptocurrency transactions will be effective immediately from July 14, 2021 at its permanent locations in New York, Hong Kong, Seoul, and London, as well as its seasonal spaces in Aspen, Palm Beach, and Taipei.

Lehmann Maupin and Carpenters Workshop Gallery will partner on a new seasonal exhibition space in Aspen, CO opening July 1 and running through mid-September. The joint gallery space will serve as a bridge between the two galleries’ programming and will act as a curatorial platform for art and design. Throughout its duration, the galleries will co-curate the space and mount two curated group exhibitions, the first exploring themes of industrialization and its impact on the natural world and the second highlighting minimalism through mastery of material, matter, and form.

Teresita Fernández will lead a tour of her In Focus presentation and discuss her latest series, Dark Earth.

Next spring, Lehmann Maupin will open its U.K. outpost in London. “Some people say these movements are ‘just a phase’ but I’m not convinced. This movement will continue to grow,” says Rachel Lehmann, the co-founder of Lehmann Maupin gallery, which has long championed female artists since its founding in 1996 and boasts a roster including Mickalene Thomas, Lee Bul, Teresita Fernández, Marilyn Minter and Cecilia Vicuña.

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce representation of Helen Pashgian. The Los Angeles-based artist is a pioneering figure in California’s Light and Space movement of the 1960s and ’70s. The gallery will mount its first major Pashgian exhibition in spring 2020, the artist’s first in New York in nearly 50 years. Lehmann Maupin will also debut new work in May 2019 at Frieze New York.

Island Universe is a site-specific commission installed inside the newly renovated Ford Foundation. Made entirely of thousands of intricate, hand-made charcoal forms, the piece spans a 30 ft. wall and suggests the earth’s geological past, when distinct land masses formed one continuous supercontinent.

Lehmann Maupin, in collaboration with Anonymous Was A Woman, is pleased to present a panel discussion on the political act of art-making as woman, featuring artists Judith Bernstein, Betty Tompkins, Susan Unterberg, and Cecilia Vicuña.

Both the worlds of art and diversity are run predominantly by straight white men, and a few organizations like Out in Tech are trying to do something about it by promoting diversity in the world of tech. Out in Tech brings the LGBTQ+ and the tech communities together. Last November 14, the organization had an event at art gallery Lehmann Maupin's new Chelsea space as lesbian artist Catherine Opie's exhibition The Modernist hung at the gallery. That night, Out in Tech announced a new initiative  that connects LGBTQ+ youth, particularly those who are people of color, to internships in the tech world. I asked George Wells, the COO of Lehmann Maupin board member of Out in Tech, about the problem with diversity in the worlds of art and tech, and what can be done to facilitate change.

Lou would then explore the materiality of the beaded panels by smashing and destroying them to create textured patterns within the work. I quizzed Lehmann and Maupin about the strategy behind selecting the space, how they planned its design, diversity in the art world, and what’s next for the global gallery.

With almost every inch of New York’s West Chelsea neighbourhood now claimed, an exciting new residentialbuilding has sprouted up where the iconic Getty gas station once stood. Designed by Peter Marino, The Getty is comprised of six apartments – five full floor units and a single duplex penthouse with a roof terrace and private pool – and houses the Hill Art Foundation and the latest outpost of the Lehmann Maupin art gallery on the first four floors

Two days before its official opening, Lehmann Maupin’s Chelsea gallery is already teeming with visitors. Artists, employees, and friends are either prepping the space for the onslaught of attention soon to follow or admiring the newly installed works, which play with light and shadow on the ivory walls. One visitor is Liza Lou, the L.A.-based artist who works primarily with glass and beads and whose solo show will open the gallery later in the week. With a quiet confidence, Lou walks among her intricate creations lining the double-height space, her eyes bright.

For two decades, Lehmann Maupin has championed some of contemporary art’s most beloved luminaries, such as Do Ho Suh, Juergen Teller, and Mickalene Thomas. Founded by Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin in 1996, the gallery has had multiple homes around New York, as well as one in Hong Kong and another in Seoul to match its growing profile. Now it occupies the former site of the Getty—gas station, that is—which was an indelible landmark in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood. As of early September, Lehmann Maupin’s space is in a mixed-use residential building developed by the Victor Group, fittingly dubbed the Getty.

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce Liza Lou: The Classification and Nomenclature of Clouds as the inaugural exhibition of the gallery’s new, additional location at West 24th Street and Tenth Avenue. Lou will present a series of recent bodies of work produced over the last three years, including her monumental The Clouds (2015-18), recently exhibited at the 21st Biennale of Sydney. The gallery will host an opening reception for the artist on Thursday, September 6, from 6 to 8 PM, at 501 West 24th Street.

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its representation of The Heidi Bucher Estate. Heidi Bucher was a Swiss artist best known for her innovative use of latex and her exploration of the physical boundaries between the body and our surroundings. Bucher’s practice can be considered an intricate process of historical preservation and metaphorical molting, which results in the poetic visualization of the complex relationship humans have with their bodies, their past, and the spaces they inhabit. Through this intensive investigation into the female body and domestic spaces, Bucher’s work seamlessly integrated two contemporaneous themes artists were grappling with during the 1970s and 1980s: the architecture of public and private spaces, and issues of femininity and the body.

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its representation of Cecilia Vicuña. The multidisciplinary Chilean artist’s work addresses critical issues of the modern era—ecological destruction, feminism, human rights, and cultural homogenization—through her genre-bending projects uniting poetry, performance, painting, and site-specific installations that span more than 40 years. Vicuña lives and works in New York and Chile. Vicuña’s inaugural exhibition with the gallery will open May 19 at 536 West 22nd Street. A joint project with the artist is planned for the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in the spring and fall of 2018.

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce that Shasha Tittmann has joined the gallery as a director in Hong Kong. Tittmann, who brings years of experience and is fluent in Mandarin and English, will manage the Hong Kong gallery starting in September, and focus on working with collectors and institutions in Asia. She has held positions at Tang Contemporary Art, Hong Kong and Beijing; and Opera Gallery, Hong Kong. Tittmann earned a Bachelor of Arts in art history from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.
