● As a continuation of her monumental installation The Clouds, Lou created a number of more modestly scaled paintings. Each work similarly consists of beaded sheets that become the surface on which she paints.
● For Pannus I, Lou hangs about 175 beaded sheets in a large-scale grid, each from a single point, creating a sculptural wall relief comprised of a series of draped cloths. Pannus (cloth) clouds are ragged shreds, sometimes constituting a continuous layer, situated below another cloud and sometimes attached to it.
● In Pannus I, Lou focuses on form through the use of monochrome white beads. In Pannus II, she brings color into play through the incorporation of colored thread (which gives the white bead a tinted appearance) and impasto oil paint that is placed throughout.
● For each installation, Lou again smashes away areas of beads, exposing the underlying threadwork and allowing for the intricate network of threads to become visible alongside the paint and beads.
