These collages juxtapose images of modernist buildings by European architects such as Le Corbusier and Fernand Pouillon with landscapes from Algerian towns, such as Ghardaia, which were colonized by the French in the 19th century. The Algerian towns served as inspiration for many European architects and by bringing these images together, Attia highlights a moment of cultural exchange between France and Algeria - which in turns parallels the artist's personal history, as he was born in France to Algerian parents. Here Attia reveals the influence of the East on the West, troubling the logic of colonial influence in which the colonizer dominates and degrades a native culture and civilization.
