“On Shuffle” at Lehmann Maupin Gallery By Danielle Dobies
The group exhibition “On Shuffle” opened at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery yesterday. The exhibition features works by Billy Childish, Kim Gordon, Kalup Linzy, Ryan McNamara, Tony Oursler, Dave Muller, Dario Robleto, and Stephen Vitiello. The artists are underground cult figures who work in various mediums whose work in the show uses and reference music, both audibly and visually.
Kalup Linzy’s "Conversations wit de Churen VII: L’ll Myron’s Trade" (2009) is a video that follows the character Katonya through a dramatic soap opera-type narrative. The characters are animated to look like shadow puppets and are voiced by Linzy himself.
Dario Robleto’s I Wish The Ocean Sounded More Like Dusty Springfield (2010) and I Wish The Ocean Sounded More Like Muddy Waters (2010) are created with apple blossom seashells. The artist took pairs of seashells and played them songs by Dusty Springfield or Muddy Waters, then returned one of the shells in the pair to the shore in an attempt to change the sound of the ocean.
“On Shuffle” at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery will be on view through August 19.
