Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin are delighted to announce the appointment of Raffaela Zerilli as Director of Central Europe. In this newly-created role, Zerilli will work alongside London-based Partner Isabella Icoz to support the gallery’s growth in Europe. Based between Berlin and Zurich, Zerilli will play a pivotal role in spearheading the expansion of the gallery’s presence in the region, with a particular focus on Germany and Switzerland. This appointment comes on the heels of a recent wave of activity for the gallery in Europe, including the continued success of the gallery’s permanent outpost in London and the forthcoming new seasonal space in Milan, opening this month. In the year ahead, several gallery artists will have major upcoming exhibitions throughout Europe, including Nari Ward’s much-anticipated retrospective at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, as well as Kim Yun Shin’s participation in Foreigners Everywhere, the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
Zerilli comes to Lehmann Maupin with over 10 years of experience. Most recently, she was a Senior Director of König Galerie in Berlin, where from 2016 to 2022 she worked closely with Tatiana Trouvé, Jeremy Shaw, Elmgreen & Dragset, Norbert Bisky, Claudia Comte, Koo Jeong A, and Michael Sailstorfer. Previously, she held a position at Galerie Crone in management and artist liaison capacities. In addition to her commercial experience in the industry, she was involved in programming the “Pavillon an der Volksbühne” and with organizing other exhibitions in Berlin with artists including Monira Al Qadiri, Gregor Hildebrandt, and Asta Gröting, among others.
As Director of Central Europe, Zerilli will work closely with the gallery’s leadership team to advance Lehmann Maupin’s artistic program, leveraging her ties to the region to expand the gallery’s network of curators, collectors, and institutions. This spring, Zerilli will represent Lehmann Maupin at the forthcoming Gallery Weekend Berlin, which coincides with the opening of Kader Attia’s solo exhibition at Berlinische Galerie and with his current residency at the Louvre Museum in Paris, where the artist has an on-site studio through June 2025 as part of the museums “Les Hôtes du Louvre” program.
“With nearly a dozen gallery artists based in Europe, the region is at the forefront of our continued evolution as a business,” says co-founder Rachel Lehmann. “It is essential for us to embrace opportunities that resonate with both our ethos and our artists’ needs as we continue to expand. Much like our decision to open a gallery in London and a pop-up in Milan, appointing Raffaela to lead our efforts in central Europe alongside London-based Partner Isabella Icoz, signifies our commitment to nurturing stronger relationships in the region. We believe her expertise will both deepen our engagement with the European community and open new doors for our artists—not only for those based in the region, but around the globe.”
"I am excited to embark on this new journey with Lehmann Maupin, expanding their presence in Europe,” says Raffaela Zerilli. “The diverse and rich cultural program Rachel Lehmann and David Maupin have been building over the last three decades is deeply admirable. I’m very honored to be part of this great team and together we will forge deeper connections in Central Europe for the artists, curators, museums and collectors alike. “
