In New York: The Avalanche of Gallery Openings This Week Andrew Russeth
NEW YORK— Get your walking shoes and your autumn sweaters out. The fall art season has begun, and it promises to be more jam-packed than ever before. Sure, unemployment is threatening double digits again, and the Dow is mired at 10,000, but there is optimism in the New York art world. Believe it: this is going to be a great year. To the listings!
FRIDAY Jennifer Steinkamp, at Lehmann Maupin, 540 West 26th Street, through October 23, opening Friday, September 10, 6–8 p.m., Despite their meticulous construction and apparently innocent subject matter, there has always been a dark undertone to Jennifer Steinkamp’s sumptuous computer-generated projections. Her last show at Lehmann Maupin, for example, featured depictions of beautiful (but poisonous) flowers. Her newest works are floating, abstract bands possessed with what she terms a "meat-like texture," alluding to bodily processes and death. The name of the series? "Premature."
