CLIMBING TREES Rei Sato, who has her first solo exhibit in New York at the Lehmann Maupin Gallery, takes a childlike approach to painting and drawing. But the artist, who lives and works in Tokyo, addresses weightier issues in her works, such as feminine identity, even as she employs the bold forms and "cuteness," or kawaii, common in Japanese animation. In many of her pieces, Ms. Sato superimposes images of children, which she draws or paints in acrylic and pen, onto a photograph. Through Friday, August 8, Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Lehmann Maupin, 540 W. 26th St., between Tenth and Eleventh avenues, 212-255-2923, free.
