Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its representation of Madrid-based artist Teresa Solar Abboud (b. 1985), who creates sculptures, drawings, and videos characterized by an interest in fiction, storytelling, natural history, ecology, and anatomy. Her work alludes to material entities in states of transformation and to the tension between the organic and synthetic, interior and exterior, gestation and birth, and embryonic and advanced. This announcement comes on the heels of a string of institutional moments for the artist over the past few years, notably including her participation in the 59th La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Cecilia Alemani in 2022; solo exhibitions at CA2M in Madrid and MACBA in Barcelona in 2024, which were accompanied by her first monograph; and the unveiling of a major site-specific commission for the High Line in New York in 2024. Her traveling solo exhibition Bird Dream Machine is currently on view at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin through October 2025.
Forthcoming projects include a solo show at Kunstverein Hannover in Germany and a public sculpture commission for the Hayward Gallery in London, both of which will be on view this fall. In 2026, Lehmann Maupin will present a focused preview of Solar Abboud’s work in New York in April, followed by an inaugural exhibition with the artist in London in September, marking the artist’s first solo show in the city. Lehmann Maupin will work in close collaboration with Solar Abboud’s Madrid-based gallery Travesía Cuatro.
Suspended between the biologically and industrially produced, the tangible and mythical, Solar Abboud’s multidisciplinary works present surreal, hybrid worlds. Within her sculptural practice, large-scale installations and smaller objects made from contrasting materials—including clay, found objects, and the integration of human symbols—frequently appear in families of sculptures. While modeled after natural forms, her sculptural exteriors often have an electric hue and machine-like sheen finish, blurring the boundary between real and imagined. For Solar Abboud, clay, in particular, takes on consequential meaning: as a primordial geological substance and constituent part of the built environment, it is naturally suffused with stories of self-protection, isolation, and transformation. Many of Solar Abboud’s recent projects explore these concerns through sculptures that take on zoomorphic shapes inspired by prehistoric life forms or resemble bodily appendages.
“As a gallery, we have a long history of championing artists who are pushing the limits of materiality and working in large scale formats, as well as giving artists their debut shows in new geographies,” says Rachel Lehmann, Co-founder of Lehmann Maupin. “Teresa is truly an exceptional artist who is creating a new visual language through her visceral works, and we couldn’t be more excited to have her join our program. We look forward to presenting her first solo shows in London and New York in the coming years.”
“It is a great honor to be part of the fabulous group of artists that Lehmann Maupin champions,” says Teresa Solar Abboud. “Through them, the gallery’s vision resonates deeply with mine—joining them feels like finding a new creative home.”
Solar Abboud’s work is included in a number of notable museum collections, including: Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Spain; MACBA Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, Spain; TBA21 Thyssen- Bornemisza Art Contemporary, Madrid, Spain; Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy; Colección Fundación Botín, Santander, Spain; Colección CA2M - Comunidad de Madrid, Spain; Colección MAEC Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación, Madrid, Spain; Colección Fundación Coca-Cola, Madrid, Spain; and the Colección Museo FRAC Córcega, France, among others.
