An exhibit that embraces the act of the selfie, where you become part of the art.
Erwin Wurm is an Austrian artist, sculptor, and photographer. He represented Austria in the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017 together with Brigitte Kowanz. Wurm’s body of work challenges the conventions, permanence, and formalism of sculpture.
Featured in this exhibition are examples of his popular One Minute Sculptures. Here, Wurm sets up a configuration of ordinary, banal objects accompanied by instructions and illustrations demonstrating to the viewer how to pose with them. In this exhibit, subject becomes object, viewer becomes the viewed, for at least a few moments.
Another prominent feature in this exhibition is a knitted wall, which is an evolution from Wurm’s earlier work he calls “clothes sculptures.” The oversized knitted sweater, like previous executions of works from this series, creates a relationship between viewer, artwork, and architecture.
