Frieze Art Fair 2007

Booth F16

October 11 - 14, 2007
540 West 26th Street

Press Release

Lehmann Maupin is pleased to announce its fourth participation in the Frieze Art Fair, from 11 through 14 October 2007. The booth will feature new works by Ashley Bickerton, Jennifer Steinkamp, Juergen Teller and Teresita Fernandez. Special installations by Tracey Emin and the Japanese artist Mr. will be on view as well as work by the newest artist to join the gallery, Lee Bul.

Mr. has designed a special installation and performance for this art fair featuring his large-eyed characters in provocative poses interspersed with popsicles and cartoon animals. New paintings in varying sizes will also be on view as part of his continued investigation into the Otaku subculture of Japan.

Following Tracey Emin’s successful representation of Great Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale, Lehmann Maupin will exhibit one of her most provocative neons along with a series of water colors, embroideries and works on paper. These subtle self-portraits and simple line drawings illustrate Emin’s skill and their importance in her body of work.

Ashley Bickerton’s new paintings depict idealized Balinese women clad in tropical flowers and little else. He continues to utilize iconographies in his hyper-real environments composed in bright colors and surrounded by intricate frames.

In each of the small monitors installed near the floor, a lone man is shown performing auto-fellatio. Alienated and oblivious to the outside world, the subject in Circle of Friends, Kutlug Ataman’s newest work, touches on the notion of the viewers “gaze” and voyeurism.

The intricate and beautiful work of Lee Bul on view is comprised of mother of pearl inlay in pristine white fields. Her innovative aesthetic will be featured at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in a retrospective that opens in November.

Additional works on view will be new paintings by Christian Hellmich; works on paper by Shirazeh Houshiary; and new bronze sculptures by Anya Gallaccio.
