13 August – 25 September 2004
Opening reception Friday, 13 August, 6-8 pm

Lehmann Maupin would like to announce the opening of Some Exhaust, a project conceived and organized by Matthew Lusk. This exhibition will include works by more than a dozen artists, each creating work specifically for this project.

For Some Exhaust, Lehmann Maupin will house a large garage structure that references both the building's facade and its history as a truck depository. This construction will reflect its placement within the gallery's Rem Koolhaas/OMA design by incorporating the sloping ceilings and asymmetrical elements that surround it. The architectural style used to transform the automotive space into a gallery space will be used in the gallery's transformation back into a garage.

Works by Bryan Crockett, Julian LaVerdiere, and others will be installed in and around the garage and will address the realm of garage spaces and the range of activities and objects created in them. From the urban and light industrial spaces of New York to the suburban and domestic carports across the country, these zones of production cough up a wealth of human endeavors. With installations drawing on influences from Disney (Helms), Ford (Ellison), common labor (Smith), meth labs (Newton), American travel (Wysocki), carbon-monoxide (Allison), and cold storage (Kohl), Some Exhaust will account for an enormous and ambivalent spectrum of productivity and destruction.

The exhibition will be accompanied by essays from Elizabeth Thomas, the assistant curator at the Carnegie Museum of Art, and by Nato Thompson, the assistant curator at Mass MoCA.
