Jonas Lipps

Biography

Jonas Lipps (b. 1979, Freiburg, Germany) creates introspective spaces using watercolor, drawings, and weathered found papers. The erratic nature of the materials transforms the space and object-hood of the deliberately small pages. The traces of dried pigment, overworked paper, and steady lines over the found imagery ultimately evolve into a space from Lipps own subconscious. Landscapes, portraiture, abstraction, color theory and collage are all referenced and simultaneously cancel each other out. In this way, Lipps presents a unique space which is both idyllic and convoluted, and like Buche asks viewers to question their own perceptions. This is Lipps first exhibition in the United States. Selected Group Exhibitions include "Kitty Kraus, Jonas Lipps, Blinky Palermo" Allsopp Contemporary, London; "The harder you Look", Eleni Koroneou Gallery, Athens (both 2007); "The Gone Wait," (curated by Tobias Buche), Gagosian Gallery, Berlin.
